Baseball was first broadcast over radio waves in the early 1920s. By the mid 1930s, many families in this part of Ohio would listen to the Cincinnati Reds’ games on the radio. By 1960, most folks watched baseball on television. We still enjoy that as sports fans today.
Baseball was a great team sport for a smaller school. Elizabeth High School usually put forth a competitive baseball team. The school’s baseball team, coached by Russell Huffman, went all the way to the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s Class B Championship final in the spring of 1937 before falling by a score of 7-6 to Holgate, a village school in Henry, County. That Betsy Bearcats team was the first team from Miami County to go to a state tournament. In March of 2009 the team was inducted into the Miami East Sports Hall of Fame.
