Our Commitment to Cemetery Preservation

Elizabeth Township Historical Society has been instrumental in the maintenance and upkeep of the township ‘s cemeteries. In recent years, our Cemetery Preservation Committee has worked with Elizabeth Township Trustees to clean, repair and replace headstones.

Our War Veterans have served the nation with valor and self-sacrifice to secure our freedom and God-given rights, We strive to continue to honor them by tending their graves on each small plot of sacred ground. We applied for and received replacement headstones for Veterans of the Revolutionary War (Casstown Cemetery), War of 1812 and Civil War (Knoop Cemetery). They were placed and secured. We are now planning an extensive project for Veteran monuments at Casstown Cemetery and we need your help.

Scope of Work

A survey of Casstown Cemetery’s sections A-D, which sit in Elizabeth Township, has been conducted in the past year by the ETHS Cemetery Preservation Committee.

Of the 2700 monuments in these sections of the cemetery, 196 are War Veterans’ monuments. 133 of those monuments are in need of restoration.  11 are in need of being reset and 8 are in need of replacement. In addition to the small amount we have in our Cemetery Preservation Fund, the society has applied to the Veterans Administration for 8 new monuments and has also applied for grant money to help defray the cost of the rest of the project. Stone Huggers Cemetery Preservation will be restoring monuments and headstones. Monetary donations will go toward the restoration of some headstones and setting of the new headstones.

How you can help

Sponsor the restoration of a small monument – $150

Sponsor the restoration of a large monument – $350

Donate an amount of your choice to honor our deceased Veterans

We greatly appreciate any support given in our endeavor to preserve the memory of those who served.

Project Schedule

Work is tentatively slated to begin in the spring of 2025 with completion to be in the fall of 2025.
