Girls in our area enjoyed little league softball from about the early to mid-1970s onward. Before that, girls played softball at school or when gathering with friends, but there had not been league play for young girls before that. BUT times were changing!

According to the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA), the first state high school girls tournament in Ohio was in 1978. We don’t need to tell many of you who won that Class A tournament. That’s right, the Miami East Vikings! This great group of young ladies (now in their early 60s) coached by Pat Palcic, had a 17-0 record for the season. Several of the girls on that team were from or had roots in Elizabeth Township.
